Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
"Lady novelist" is an apt designation for Angela Thirkell, who is enjoying something of a minor renaissance with the reissue of several of her 40-odd novels. Thirkell specialized in decorous, Austenesquechronicles of life in the imaginary English country of Barsetshire, where widowhood, philandering husbands, and even the shadow of Nazi Germany fail to daunt her plucky and resourceful heroines. The real story here, however, is her thorny relationship with her son Colin MacInnes, the author of Absolute Beginners and the Jack Kerouac of wartime London.
