Product Description

Nicholas Sayre will do anything to get across the Wall, back to the Old Kingdom.

Thoughts of Lirael and Sam haunt his dreams, and he has come to realize that his destiny lies there, along with all those he cares for. But here in Ancelstierre, far south of the Wall, the Charter is dormant, and among the obstacles Nick faces is one that is not entirely human, and which has a strange power that seems to come from Nicholas himself.

With "Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case," Garth Nix continues to explore the magical world of The Abhorsen Trilogy. In additional short stories that range from classic fantasy -- two widely different takes on the Merlin myth -- to a gritty urban version of Hansel and Gretel, to an unusual take on the role of nature in matters of love, and to a heartbreaking story of children and war, Garth Nix displays the range and versatility that have made him one of today's leading writers of fantasy for readers of all ages.

Not as compelling as the author's other works

Simply stated, I did not find this novella to be nearly as compelling as other books authored by Garth Nix. While it may or may not reflect more my personal tastes than any inherent flaw in the book, I must say that I was surprised enough by what I read that I actually took time to consider whether or not it would be worth-while to sell it, just to get it off my hands, since I knew I wouldn't be re-reading it.

Can't get enough of the Abhorsen world

If this book had only contained "Across the Wall" and "Lightning Bringer" I would have been happy to buy and read it and would have rated it a 5. These two stories are excellent. Anyone who has read Abhorsen most probably will want to read Across the Wall. And excellent addition to the story.

The rest of the stories just didn't connect for me. Some I didn't even read after trying for a few pages. But the two I listed are worth the purchase.

I didn't really like the ones that weren't about Sabriel, Lireal, and the other people. It ended abruptly. (Sniff) I miss the dog!

One Good Book

In this book Garth Nix takes all his old notes and brainstormed ideas and put them into the book. There are 13 short story's in this book each story has characters from the series Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen.
In this review I will tell you of my favorite short story in the book Nicholas Sayre and the Creature in the Case. In this story prince Sameth's friend from Ancelstierre is in need to cross the wall to do research the magic that the Old Kingdom people called the charter. But Nicholas's dad dose not approve of him crossing the wall. Nicks father is a chef minister in Ancelstierrre. So Nick goes and asks a guy who can give him a pass to cross the wall. The man agrees but Nick has to do him a favor.
Read the book to see what nick has to do to get his pass.

One mainstream war story here, and a couple of joke pieces done for appearances at different places, and a choose your own adventure parody for one of the good old Australian game magazines.

It also appears the novella in the book is related to his popular trilogy, none of which I have read, so a taste of that will be useful for some. Seems to be some sort of magic kingdom next to a Victorian technology type place with trains and guns, but still aimed at kids, so not really for me by the looks.
