Product Description
For counselors and students looking for a concise introduction to Gestalt counseling, you can find no better--or more practical--guide than this vivid, well-written volume. From the first encounter with a client to the successful completion of the counseling process, Clarkson takes the reader through all stages of Gestalt. She clearly outlines preconditions for counseling, demonstrates how a counselor can incorporate Gestalt techniques, and discusses the possible limitations of this technique. In addition, the responsibilities of the counselor are explored and guidelines and standards for training in Gestalt therapy are thoroughly examined. "This volume is worth recommending to students who want to know more about gestalt counseling." --Contemporary Psychology "This is one of the best books in this excellent series. It gives an up-to-date and sophisticated view of the Gestalt approach to counselling, and shows how Gestalt is far more than a 'two-chair' method. . . . All in all, this is an excellent introduction to the Gestalt method, and could be used on any course which requires people to be aware of such approaches." --British Journal of Medical Psychology "A handy update on Gestalt in the '80's. . . . The book has an excellent reference section on Gestalt and helps make it a very useful sourcebook as well as a good general guide." --Self and Society "Petruska Clarkson has given us a unique introduction to Gestalt counselling. There is an ease in the way she sets Gestalt counselling within the context of contemporary psychotherapeutic thinking and navigates among the divergent perspectives of various Gestalt colleagues. Hers is a mature Gestalt Therapy, repened in long years of responsible clinical experience and freed of offensive exaggerations and superficialities which sometimes have occurred in the Gestalt literature....easy to understand, yet profound in its simplicity....this work can be recommended whole heartedly." --British Gestalt Journal

Having just started on a Gestalt training myself, I found this book to be an easy read and also very informative about Gestalt principles.
I would have liked to give it a 5 star rating but didn't have anything else to compare it to as it's the first Gestalt book I have read so far.
Definately recommend it to Gestalt fledglings like me!

Clarkson's writing is appropriate to present time. The straightforwardness and depth of her writing is true to transcendence, and the core of Gestalt therapy, in philosophy and practice. Balanced and egalitarian, this book is a good example of writing that integrates masculine and feminine energies.
