Product Description
Jackson Daniels, investigative detective with the Knoxville Police Department, is called to the scene of a murder at a ritzy hotel in Knoxville. A dead man lies on the bed, above his mutilated body the words, Wayne's Dead, have been written. Jackson and his team of detectives ascertain fairly quickly that they are faced with a brutal serial killer who has been on the loose in the Southeast for the past twelve years. Choosing married, middle-aged attorneys as prey, the killer seduces them, murders them, and then mutilates the body afterwards, leaving the same message on the wall above the victims. Frustrated over the lack of evidence found at each scene, Jackson and his team frantically search for their perpetrator, never suspecting that the person they are trying to find has been with them from the start.

Wayne's Dead is a compelling page-turner that delivers a very satisfactory read. Everything you want from a thriller is here, nail-biting suspense, gruesome murder scenes, an intriguing killer, a brave, determined detective, and enough chills to keep you awake for a few nights. The last page alone had me sleeping with the light on.

Ms. French has a fine hand with character development. Jackson and Gillian are very well drawn and the secondary characters--Marvin in particular--are interesting and likeable. She also is very skilled at writing dialogue, something many authors struggle with. The dialogue in Wayne's Dead is believable and, at times, made me feel as if the characters were in the room with me and I was eavesdropping on their conversations.

The book was also very well researched. I learned a few things about MPD and about police procedure. Being an avid fan of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct novels, I didn't think that was possible!

Those of you who are looking for a classic murder-mystery where the reader is given clues as to the killer's identity, I give you fair warning, this is not it. Wayne's Dead is suspense, it could even be classified as romantic suspense, without the typical "happily ever after" ending. Crime fiction, detective fiction, or police procedural. Take your pick. This book focuses on the way a case is solved and on the evolving relationship between the characters, not on whodunit.

I hope those of you who are mature enough to recognize a well-thought out, well-written, suspenseful story will read Wayne's Dead. I think you'll enjoy it very much. I know I did!

Jackson Daniels of the Knoxville Police Department is up against a serial murderer with a very gruesome streak - as the mutilated bodies left behind testify, this is a murderer with a lot of anger to vent, and the book takes us into the background and source of this anger.

Although this is not a classic murder-mystery as such (or at least I hope it wasn't intended as such as it's very obvious who the killer is) the writing style saves the day and overall this is quite a pleasant read.

What's with these five star ratings? Must be friends of the author. Read the real reviews of one star, which I wish I had paid attention to. Predictable, predictable, predictable, extremely disappointing. Don't bother.

I bought this book because of all the five star reviews on this page. I cannot believe that those people are not shills. Read the other low reviews if you want to really know what's up. This was the most predictable book I've ever read, and that includes the "Choose your own adventure" series. I had to write this, my first review ever, because I felt so burned.

But by all means, if you think "Rush Hour" is a great example of a karate movie, then this might be the book for you.

Thrilling!
